Granite, gneiss (pronounced "nice"), and quartzite are crystalline igneous and metamorphic rocks. Although they vary greatly in appearance, they are generally the hardest and most durable of masonry stones.  Since granite is non-porous it will not change colour due to the external environment, whereas other products such as limestone and sandstone can change colour over time.
